ABOUT BROOMS
Brooms Atelier is an architecture and construction studio based in the Alentejo in Portugal.
Founded by John Shannon, a Brasilian born American architect and builder, Brooms designs and builds on and off grid Small Homes, Modular Homes, and Tiny Homes.
We work with individual owners who are looking for permanent or temporary housing as well as with local municipalities to create and fill the need for local long term housing solutions
Brooms strives for true "Sustainability" focusing on building science, high quality materials with low embodied energy, cradle to cradle lifespans, non toxic and low VOC EU certified materials, and maximum insulation and thermal resistance.
Our "Houzinho" model and prototype is coming soon with an expected completion date of September 12th 2026.

MATERIALS

We carefully select natural, durable, and low-toxicity materials that contribute to healthy living and age gracefully over time.
Our water and weather proofing layer materials are of the highest quality with priority on environment friendliness, permeability, and breathability.
Wood, cork, lime, wool, hemp and other bio based materials often become part of the process, alongside modern construction techniques.
Our approach is inspired by both innovation and traditional building knowledge.
